Our Story
Black Star was founded by Michael Lutz, a determined entrepreneur from the small town of Kalispell, Montana. His journey began in 2008 at the age of 22, when he embarked on an extraordinary adventure to Iraq shortly after welcoming his daughter Jade in 2007. Starting with humble beginnings in trash pickup, Michael quickly demonstrated his adaptability and drive, transitioning into network installation within his first year overseas—despite having no prior networking experience.
During his two-year tenure in Iraq, Michael faced significant challenges, including a 480-volt DC shock caused by improper grounding in a base facility. Undeterred, he returned to Montana in 2010.
After taking a year to regroup, he joined Nomad Technologies in 2012, followed by an opportunity with Integrated Security Solutions (ISS) in 2013, where he discovered his true calling. At ISS, Michael excelled from the outset, taking on the ambitious Bay Pines VA project in St. Petersburg, Florida. Initially hired to pull wire and learn security system installation, he quickly rose to the challenge of implementing an enterprise-level EIGRP network—far exceeding his original scope. Over the next five years with Montana ISS, Michael pursued certifications from leading manufacturers while honing his expertise through hands-on experience. His work took him to high-profile facilities across the country, including the NSA, FBI, CIA, BLM, DOJ, DOI, DOR, Social Security, IRS, Atlanta VA, Florida Naval JAG, federal dams from Oregon to Utah, and military bases spanning Ft. McCoy, Wisconsin, to Ft. Hamilton, New York.
In 2018, Michael relocated to Arizona, joining APL to install security systems at PetSmart’s corporate office in Phoenix. A few years later, he moved to Florida, where he served as Head of Security and Network Design for the private owners of a prominent beverage corporation. There, he spearheaded the development of a cutting-edge, fully automated smart home and three-acre estate. This innovative system utilized RFID chips embedded in clothing to personalize room temperatures and lighting, while motion-activated pathway lights guided residents. The property’s advanced security system identified authorized personnel via RFID tags in shirts and employee badges, deploying drones to track and monitor unauthorized individuals until security arrived.
In 2020, Michael joined McDean, where he spent three years enhancing security systems for U.S. Marshals Service facilities nationwide, from Alaska to Puerto Rico. His efforts transformed outdated analog systems into state-of-the-art 4K digital solutions, bolstering safety and efficiency.
Inspired by years of witnessing inefficiencies in government contracts, Michael founded Black Star with a mission to deliver exceptional value to taxpayers. Committed to transparency and excellence, Black Star provides high-quality security and network solutions at affordable rates, guided by the principle of "Do Only Good Everyday" (DOGE). With a proven track record and a passion for innovation, Michael and his team are dedicated to serving clients with integrity and expertise.
